This portion usually falls out during the week of Purim. In the evening we listen to the story that was written in the Megillah. We read the Megillah in the synagogue. In the mourning we return to the synagogue and listen to the story again. See the story of Purim. We get dressed up in costumes and prepare two food platters containing two different blessings for a neighbor/friend. The day of megillah reading is followed by Shushan Purim.
The Sabbath before Purim is called Sabbath Zachor we read a special portion in addition to the above portion. This is read the Sabbath before Purim.
This portion discusses the occurrence with Amalek. This is the tribe that Haman’s ancestors came from in the story of Purim. This tribe descended from Esau.
